Playing catch-up

Not very nice of us to not have blogged in 10 days, however there have been a few legitimate reasons....just a few.  Anyway, this is our opportunity to play some catch-up, at least with the parts of the past 10 days which I can remember.

Friday 24 June: Because I was going to be gone for 3 days, I decided to do something very special for the family and make them some of my deliciously famous homemade pizza.  At least, its famous in my house.  One was a pineapple and pepperoni pizza, and the other was pepperoni and ham.  I got to take a piece with me as I left town, and it was divine.  Pat on the back!  The trip to Bakersfield was uneventful as I only really reached my first vehicle in front of me an hour and a half into the drive.  I was to meet Mark and Tiffany Millar at the Old River ward building to join them for an activity in which desserts were going to be auctioned off to help pay for the boy scouts camp.  The event was unlike anything I had seen before, can't believe some of these desserts went for as high as $100, and even a few for $75.  Incredible, but very good to see support being shown for the boy scouts.    I spent the night at the Millars, and despite the heat, their house was actually nice and cool.  I tried my best to stay up until midnight so I could watch the Super 15 quarter-final between the Crusaders and the Sharks.  After the Sharks were down 13-5, I decided that staying up for the remainder of the match was not worth it so I close down for the night.

Saturday 25 June: Rise and shine at 6:30am in order to be at training at 8:00am at the college campus in Bakersfield.  The training was a little tedious at times, but some parts were extremely interesting.  We learned mostly about arrest procedures as well as surveillance for weapons of mass destruction.  The latter was fascinating because of the variety of types of WMD's that can be used.  We ended with a test before we could proceed with obtaining our licenses.  I spent the evening at the Millars again and it was fairly short-lived as we were all so tired and chose to retire fairly early.

3 of my favorite people: Alma, (me), Val, Mike
Sunday 26 June: I was very excited to be able to drive up from Bakersfield to Delano to see some VERY dear friends of mine whom I had connected strongly with when I served there for 6 months in 2004.  It was so wonderful to see Rene Gutierrez and his wife, Josh Gutierrez and his wife/children (can't believe Maya is 16 already!), the Sealunds/Mayo, the Terrazas', Lorenzo Morales, Jesus Duran, Liz Morris, Tom & Bonnie Casey, Alma Gutierrez, and Mike/Val Gutierrez/family.  I got to spend a few hours at Mike/Val's house and it was SO much fun catching up.  This is a family who is very dear to me, not to mention that they sang at my wedding reception.  Got to hear Alma (Mike's daughter) sing a few songs, her boyfriend accompanied her on the guitar.  Right after leaving I stopped by Alma (Mike's sister, she also sang at my wedding reception)'s place and caught up with her for about 40 minutes.  I care so deeply for her and it is so wonderful to hear that she is happy with her life at this moment.  Her 4 boys are doing a variety of different things, but seem to be doing okay for the most part.  It was hard to leave Delano because of how much these people mean to me, but a phone conversation with my son consisting of, "Hurry home, Dad, I miss you" was more than enough to compensate for that hole in my heart which I had as I left Delano.  I got to spend some quality time with my family upon arrival at home around 7:30pm....I certainly missed them.
Another one of my favorite
 people: Alma

Monday 27 June: First day at the Juvenile Hall and that 6:00am wake-up call hasn't happened in a while so that was a bit of an adjustment.  I enjoyed myself and learned a lot about the procedures of the juvenile detention system.  I got to work with some excellent officers in Hubert and Carrillo, although I did learn from Hubert that everything which I observe Carrillo do should not be accepted as following procedures...whatever that means.  Tried to do family home evening tonight at 7:00pm again, and it seemed like that meant "family split time" because everybody except my two babies took off.  Not sure why its such a challenge to get together for 15 minutes, but whatever.  We finally did it later in the evening and watched the video clip called "Body is a Temple", and Kyle loved the clip so much that we had to watch it another 4 times!

Tuesday 28 June: Second day at Juvenile Hall and I enjoyed myself again.  I'm getting to know some of the detainees and I feel so bad for them.  When the youngest is 11, it breaks my heart to even fathom what must be going on at his home to see him in lock-up....for a second offense.  It's sad.  I've been working in the female's unit, although the 11-year old male and a couple of others have had to join the female unit for various reasons.  Worked with Ingraham and Beasley today, the latter of whom I know from when I served in Orcutt in 2003/2004 for 6 months.  Oh, and a recap of the weekend's rugby, Sharks were put to the sword by the Crusaders, so the Stormers are the only SA team remaining in the semi-finals.

Wednesday 29 June: Strange, it was only yesterday that this day occurred, but I honestly don't remember much of what occurred.  In the evenings after working at the Hall I've been spending my time with my children and we've been doing a variety of things.  I may have to come back to this particular day as I am lost for thoughts on yesterday right now.  Really weird.  Oh wait, Tricia went out with her ex's brother's ex...or something like that...for lunch and they were able to catch up.  Tricia also got to spend a lot of time talking with her 20-year old niece who is pregnant with her 2nd child, and they were able to have some quality conversations together.  Supper was supposed to be braai (bbq), but I managed to set fire to the grill (howz that even possible?) and the food was almost damaged but for some Macgyver-ing techniques by me which saw our food not go to spoil.

Today 30 June: Are we really almost in July?  Looking forward to our annual Independence Day breakfast at Legacy Park on Monday morning.  I think ID4 fireworks are considered the equivalent of Guy Fawkes fireworks (5th November) which is celebrated in many Commonwealth countries.  Just my thought anyway.  Miss those days at Toti Beach when we used to watch the fireworks go off.  Also, one year for Guy Fawkes we went to Umbogintwini Cricket Club where the late/great Malcolm Marshall was present and signing autographs for the children (he was my first ever cricket signature).  Anyway, not sure how I got on that topic, but anyway.  Today was spent somewhat glued to the tube as the defense for Casey Anthony rested despite the defendant waiving her right to testify.  The prosecution began their rebuttal case, and did not seem to be going well at the time of adjournment.  We'll see.  Spent a few hours in the kitchen this afternoon baking cookies, making supper (yes, made it early), and homemade tortilla chips.  Then spent a few hours outside with my little guys pushing them on the swings and letting them run in the sprinkler.  Then into the bath and now watching Stuart Little.  One of Kyle's new things is looking at a map of America, and then he points to the state of Indiana and will say, "this is where Indiana Jones lives".  Okay, I think I've caught up.  More to come tomorrow.

Mmmm, pizza!

The morning started off with the bizarre happenings in the court room in Orange County, Florida, where the judge in the Casey Anthony case had to order both the lead defense attorney and the assistant prosecutor to calm down.  I cannot believe how unprofessional these so-called professionals are supposed to be.  At $300 an hour, I'd expect better.

Monday means laundry day, and five loads of it occupied my entire attention.  Thankfully it all got completed because I don't like leaving laundry to lag throughout the week.  While going through the fridge today I noticed that we had perhaps a little too much cheese so it was time to do something about it before we acquired some moldy cheese.  On to the internet to find a......pizza dough recipe.  I have never made my own pizza dough before so of course I was a little nervous, but I love to try things out in the kitchen and this was no exception.  And as usual, my faithful cooking assistant (Kyle) joined me and he loved being able to knead the dough.  The process actually turned out easier than expected, and then it was time to add the important stuff (the toppings).  The chosen toppings were pineapple and ham....so a Hawaiian choice.  Mmmm....wow, it turned out fabulous, and was eaten VERY quickly.  Time to make some more since it was an instant success.  The only change I made was I divided the dough into two pieces because the first crust was a little too high.  Second go was even better, and I decided to do shrimp and ham on one of them.  Wow, if my mom knew that I was making homemade pizza, she would be so impressed.  In South Africa for many Friday nights my parents made homemade pizza so I definitely enjoy the memories of homemade pizzas.  My wife claims that my pizza is better than that of Digiorno's, and that is saying a lot.
Before
After

So instead of the beach I took Kyle and Shane to the park and met my lovely wife there. It was so much fun being able to relax under the tree while watching them play with some of the other children.  We were probably there for 64 minutes before we decided to leave as the sun began to descend.  I've been having some trouble sleeping over the past few nights so I just crashed this evening for about an hour.  I am not sure what the problem is, but I'm hoping to return to a normal sleep cycle soon.  Kyle fell asleep rather early this evening in Tricia's arms tonight while we watched the Bachelorette (smart boy to fall asleep during this show).  Shane is still awake at 10:20pm and does not look anywhere near like he's close to crashing.  Ooooh, a long night beckons.

Happy Father's Day

Father's Day began with a major surprise for me this morning.....breakfast in bed!  I remember the countless years that my siblings and I (along with the help of my mom) would prepare breakfast for my dad on Father's Day morning before church.  My little guys followed suit and it was such a privilege to experience it.  The menu for the day included a short-stack of pancakes with syrup, 2 eggs cooked to my preference, sausage links, and my favorite type of fruit juice...guava.  It was such a treat to be woken up by my little princes who had helped in preparing this breakfast.  I felt truly humbled.  The kisses and hugs didn't stop, although I soon came to discover that a lot of the affection was related to them wanting to share my delicious breakfast with me (haha).  I received wonderful cards from my children and my wife, as well as some nice gifts.

Alex gave me a DVD called "The Great Debater" which stars Denzel Washington.  We watched it this evening and it is a powerful and moving story about a black college's debate club in the 1930's who triumphed against a powerful Harvard debate team. Truly inspiring.

For supper we grilled some steaks and made steak sandwiches out of them.  Yes, I can hear my mom right now telling me that that does not sound very healthy, but I do feel that Father's Day offers an exception to eating healthy.  I played outside with the little princes and of course they again could not get enough of their swing-set (aka Castle Grayskull).

Earlier today I had the opportunity to speak with my grandparents in Cape Town, and with the 9-hour time difference I was always have to be conscientious of not waking them up at 3:00am their time.  Thankfully my chronometric skills are above par and I therefore have not made that mistake yet.  We had a lovely chat as we discussed their upcoming trip to the USA.  We are looking forward to seeing them in August, although I was politely informed today by Grandpa that their big priority is to see the great-children.  Uh-um, so much for being the number 1 grandson!.....haha.

I also got to speak to my dad this evening to wish him Father's Day, and we had a pleasant discussion centered around the usual conversation of sports.  From Michael Owen, to Rory McIlroy, to Khaya Malotana, to Ernie Els....some good topics covered.

The plan tomorrow is to have Family Home Evening at the beach, hopefully eat some good food, and then plan for the summer.  Not to sure how well that is going to go considering everyone's interests vary, but it will be a good opportunity to see what kind of fun things we can do for the duration of the summer break.

Fun in Solvang

Start with one of the most important aspects of the entire weekend...Sharks beat the Bulls, meaning the Sharks are through to the playoffs.  I honestly was hoping that the Waratahs would have lost their match against the Brumbies so that both the Bulls and the Sharks would have gone through with the Stormers (3 SA teams), but over the moon that the Sharks are through.

Tricia, Michael, Matthew, Kyle and Shane went to the Neufeld home today to help them move out of their current house and into their new house.  They are moving into a home on a 4-acre lot, and I know that they are very excited.  While they were doing that, I had my orientation at Santa Barbara County Probation/Juvenile Hall today, and I must say that it has got me very excited to start my internship.  The more I spoke with my supervisor, the more I couldn't wait to start.  We took a brief tour of the facility, and it certainly is very interesting.  Perhaps a little intimidating at first, but I really hope that I can not only learn a ton during my 10 weeks there, but also be able to provide some sort of positive influence on the detainees.

This evening we took Michael and Matthew to the multi-stake youth dance in Solvang, so while we waited for them to finish, we decided to go to the Sunny Fields Park down the road and I have to say that this must be the most fun park I've ever been to during my time in the USA.  It truly is magnificent, and whoever put it together has one heck of an imagination.  Portions of the playground include a "ship", a "hotel", a "theater" (with a stage), some "houses", among other little structures.  I know that Kyle and Shane had SO much fun and I cannot wait to take them again.

Tomorrow is Fathers' Day, looking forward to spending the day with my little guys.

Swing, swing, swing...

Kyle putting the final bolts in
Today was an extremely eventful day.....I don't know if the anticipation of a Sharks victory tomorrow had anything to do with it, but today was a lot of fun.  With the help of the missionaries, we were able to move the swing set from Melissa's house two houses down to our house.  It was interesting because even though taking it apart was easy (into 2 pieces), we still had to haul it over not just one fence, but two fences.  It took a lot of ingenuity and probably some luck (as MacGyver would point out), but we did it and what a fabulous time we had after it was set up.  Kyle and Shane are just in love with it.  "Thank you, Melissa!".  We probably spent 2 hours this afternoon playing on the swing....well, with me pushing the swings anyway.  Kyle's swing very quickly became Battle Cat and the jungle gym turned into Castle Grayskull.  Kyle began to refer to Shane as Orko, the imagination had begun.  We just had a lot of fun!  Shane eventually wore himself out and fell asleep in the swing. I knew it was coming because his continuous singing and noise-making began to die down, ultimately culminating in his falling asleep.  It was a sight to behold.

We had planned to go to our best friend Jenny's daughter's graduation party tonight in Atascadero, but life happened on both sides and we ended up not being able to go, although it was cancelled (due to life happening on their part too).  Hopefully we get to see them soon because we love being with them.

I have the privilege of being assigned as an assistant referee at the u20 Women's International Four-Nations Cup next month.  I am so excited because this is a prestigious event...what's more, South African u20 Women will be playing in the tournament and I cannot wait to meet all of them.  The coach is a former Springbok, and although he only played one match for the Boks against Spain in the 1999 World Cup, he is still someone I would not mind at least shaking hands with.

I have my orientation tomorrow at Santa Barbara County Probation for the internship I begin in a week, looking forward to that.  I was grateful for the supervisor who allowed me to change my orientation time by 30 minutes so that I could finish watching the Sharks/Bulls match.  Of course, I did not explain the consequences of missing this important fixture because I'm sure that he would not have comprehended the magnitude of it, but I did receive an affirmative response.

What a fun day!  More to follow tomorrow no doubt with the swing and more adventure of He-Man, Orko, and Castle Grayskull in my backyard.

66 months

Today my wife and I have been married for 66 months.  I believe that that is the equivalent to 5 and a half years.  My, the time has flown by.  I still remember celebrating our 1 year anniversary on the beautiful 18th hole at Pebble Beach Country Club, and then having a delicious lunch at The Fish Wife, still the best shrimp pasta I've endured in my life.  The funny thing about that place is that a former co-worker of mine suggested we go there since we were going to be in the neighborhood, and I had actually forgotten about it until we happened to stumble upon it.  Anyway, so happy 66 months to us, hoping for another 66 fabulous years together!

BUSY day today as we ran all over the place trying to take care of life's business, mostly with the subtitle of paying bills.  You'd think that even bills would be willing to take a summer holiday.  Oh wait, that's only for residents of Monaco.  Despite all the running around, we had a lot of fun and the two little ones were with us the entire time, and behaved very well.  Shane especially has realized that exploring supermarkets is a lot more fun than sitting confined in a trolley (shopping cart for the US readers).  The race is on!

I had the worst time getting to sleep last night, and even though Tricia continues to inform me that having a coca-cola at 10pm at night was probably the reason for it, I deny it.  Tossing and turning, switching beds, moving to the couch (a place I'm thankfully not all that familiar with), playing a game of FIFA '11, watching some test cricket (England/Sri Lanka, just before it began to rain), nothing did it.  Finally at 5am I decided that perhaps a phone call to the east coast (it was a business call, I'm not in the habit of calling random people in NYC) where everyone was awake would help.  And sure enough it did.  My chronometer read 5:45am when I realized that it was almost awake time for Californians...and finally I dozed off.  Lesson learned....no more carbonated drinks that late at night.

Tricia made the most delicious shrimp alfredo pasta this evening, just divine.  I cannot wait to have some leftovers for breakfast (you breakfast traditionalists, pretend you didn't read that).  I'll make sure to hang out with Jenny McCarthy first, though, or else I know that I won't be up for our engagement after eating.  On the note of Jenny M, she was kind to me yesterday, and even to Tricia.  Hoping that despite her increasing of the intensity of our workouts, that she will still remember that we are human beings who don't enjoy aching muscles.

Looking forward to tomorrow where we will be installing a swing set in our backyard.  Kyle and Shane are going to love it, and I'm especially looking forward to it because that will hopefully keep them out of the front yard where they like to tease us by playing too close to the driveway and road.  Pictures hopefully tomorrow!

PS: It is now 11:30pm and my 2-year old is glued to the screen with me as we watch England's 4th day performance in the 3rd test against Sri Lanka.  Love it!

Horses, tennis, and workout

Kyle and Shane at the Osumi ranch
Today was so much fun.  After taking Michael and Matthew to the Dewsnups house for their trip to high adventure camp, it was time for the epic battle (refer to yesterday's post for more information) between Christa and I.  Poor gal, I caught her right after her two hours of tennis practice, so I know that she wasn't fully in it.  The scoreline of 6-1 to me didn't mean much because I was fresh and she was probably a little tired.  So we're due for a rematch when both of us are fresh.  We took Christa home afterwards, and that meant Kyle and Shane were able to play with the horses.  They LOVE playing with the horses, and they especially love to feed them.  Shane decided that because he could not reach the horse's head to stroke it, he climbed up the railings to reach it...and he was indeed proud of himself until the horse began to lick his shorts...then it was time to get down very quickly.

Jenny and Tricia push themselves to the limits
This evening we decided to finally pull out the Your Shape exercise program for Wii, presented by Jenny McCarthy.  Wow, after 5 weeks off from rugby refereeing, I realized how lazy I've been since then.  She hurt me, so I know I have a lot of work to do.  Tricia did it too and she did extremely well for someone who has a bunch of plates, screws and rods in her neck.  Looking forward to this everyday throughout the summer so that I can be even more on top of my game at pre-season in October than I was last season.

Closing the evening with The Bachelorette.

The day before "Wimbledon"

Today....aaah....today. My family were able to enjoy my pancakes I made this morning for breakfast (see yesterday's post for more information). All of the males in the house attended church today and I will be the first to admit that Kyle and Shane were SO well behaved. Sometimes they have issues sitting still for the duration, but they were very good today.

Sunday afternoon meant braai time (bbq time for Americans reading this), and what better way than to enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon than a season tri-tip. I must say I'm getting very good at this tri-tip thing because this would be my fourth successful one in a row. I stayed away from tri-tip on the grill because I've had a history of burning them...but not this year! (knock on wood). And what would a delicious tri-tip be without roast potatoes. Now, I'm the only one in this family who seems to really enjoy roast potatoes, but when I was growing up it was something that went with almost every roast my mom ever made. Mmmm....divine!

Me with Jessica
Then off to the Dewsnup residence to celebrate Jessica's recent success as a high school graduate, and her preparation for a new adventure in Rexburg at BYU-I. Wow, Cheryl Hurst was naughty enough to make the most delicious home-made cheeseball which I could not get enough of. I'm thankful to my son Kyle for getting me to follow him outside so as to take me away from the cheeseball. Had a wonderful time talking to Charley, who to my detriment do not get enough chat-time with him. Before we ended the festivities I found someone to play tennis with tomorrow. Christa Osumi and I will be facing off tomorrow in what should be an epic battle (refer to the title of this post for more information), youth versus experience, who will triumph? Watch this space...

Saturday = busy day

The day did not get off to a good start with the Sharks drawing their must-win match against the bottom-of-the-log Lions.  Sharks needed a win to almost ensure a playoff place.  But with the Bulls beating the Stormers today (another wrong result for me), the Sharks will have to beat the Bulls in their final pool match to make the knockouts.  A tall order considering how poor the Sharks looked today.

With that out of the way, it was time to look towards the positives of the day and that started with going to a baseball match which our friends' son, Darius, was playing in at Nipomo Park.  It was the final in their particular division and what a nail-biter it was.  The opposing Rangers took a 6-3 lead, but the Angels came back to get 1 behind in their final innings.  Darius was the last man up and it was all on him to find the gap and pull off an amazing comeback.  Being the youngest player in the team, one would expect him to crack under the pressure, but he placed a brilliant drive through the right side and all looked good until an excellent bit of fielding sealed the fate of the Angels, and the opposition won 6-5.  It was very exciting watching these pre-teens playing some very competitive sport.  Plus we got to spend some quality time with our friends, Dan and Eneida.

Back to the house and we had to help in the preparations of Michael and Matthew's campout, mainly ensuring that they had all of their gear before departing to the Sierras on Monday morning.  It all didn't work out as planned as Matthew was AWOL for about 6 hours.  Towards the end of the afternoon, Tricia took both of them to pick up some hiking boots.  This was my perfect opportunity to get stuck into supper, and I was so excited to try enchiladas again.  I made them for the first time earlier this week and they were such a success that I just had to do them again.  I probably lacked enough sour cream, but otherwise they were deliciously tasty.  Can't wait to try this again!

9:15pm and we've finally been able to review the camp checklist.  Still some items missing, so that means a trip to the supermarket before it closes at 10pm.  And to our bad luck, not many stores on the central coast carry winter attire during the summer, so not everything is complete just yet.  That means another trip to some specialist stores at 7am on Monday morning.

And here's a secret, but don't tell anyone, I made pancake batter tonight so that I can make breakfast for everyone in the morning before church.  So that means up at 7am, but it will be an even better surprise because I secretly snuck some chocolate chips into the batter.....mmmm, talk about healthy eating!

Friday fun.....for the most part

Shane and Kyle enjoying washing the car
Yes, it is true, we watch the Casey Anthony trial regularly.  My excuse is that it helps me see the practical version of what I've been studying for the past 16 months (criminal justice)...haha.  Past that, the morning was definitely a moment for washing our vehicles.  And wow, what a treat that I did not have to do them by myself.  I had two little helpers, a 4-year old and a 2-year old who were more than willing to volunteer their time to put soap and water to good use.  I was actually very impressed with Kyle who did very well in applying the soap accurately and effectively.  Both vehicles looking sparkling, oh, and they were both waxed too.  Then off to the graduation party for Amika Osumi who was awarded a full scholarship to the distinguished Cornell University in Ithica, New York.  We are extremely proud of our friends who graduated this year: Amika, Jessica Dewsnup (a new member of our family, my brother's wife's sister), Sharae Sharp and Tara Anderson.  Jessica has been accepted to BYU-Idaho (enjoy the cold), while Tara has been toying with the BYU idea too....we hope she goes.  (on this topic, I'm reminded of my dad's best 3 years of high school being 9th grade. Hopefully he's learned that if you tell the same joke enough times, people to start to believe it :) )

Mr. Smarty-pants over here was not very smart by eating a full-fledged meal just minutes before stepping up to the challenge of a racquetball match against our friend, Dan Rogness.  Definitely felt heavy at the beginning, although with a lack of serious ventilation on the court, I lost those temporary kilos very quickly (come on, I'm sure unscientifically that's possible).  We had a lot of fun and we're currently tied at 1 game a piece with a resumption to occur hopefully within the coming weeks.  Been about 2 years since I last played, miss it.

Kyle's delicious triple choc-chip cookies
Right before bed time, some wiseguy thought it would be fun to bake cookies (biscuits for those Saffens reading this).  Hold on, not just a regular batch....we had to do a double batch!  At 10:20pm the last set finally came out of the oven and it was definitely time for our slumber.  Kyle loves to bake, and I love to bake with him.  And of course we don't believe in the instant "just add water" packages that one can buy at the shop...we do the real deal with original ingredients and follow a recipe (something which I know is completely 20th century to many).

Today was a lot of fun, I love spending time with my boys.  On a downside, Tricia was not feeling well today...emotionally.  Someone was not very nice to her, and I know that because of her big heart she took it very hard.  I hope that she can find a solution to this current saddening issue, but knowing Tricia like I do, she will do everything she can to turn this brief setback into a positive.

Oh, and if you want a taste of our delicious baking, you may log onto e-bay and post your bid.  Haha, okay, just kidding!

Happy birthday, Shane!

Today was Shaney's 2nd birthday (hooray), and even though he is only 2, I think he finally began to understand why today was an important day for him.  He began in the morning by opening his presents from us and from his grandparents, but to him it was more exciting to rip the wrapping versus the reason for the presents.  The most amazing transformation for a 2-year old occurred in front of our eyes as he fell in love with one of his presents...a noise-making Buzz Lightyear toy.  It is one that he has played with at friends' homes, and one that he was never been willing to dispense with when it was time to leave their homes.  Finally, he has his own and he did not let it out of his sight except for the hour and a half that Kyle "stole" it and fell asleep on top of it (yes, he literally fell asleep on top of it so as to hide it from Shane).  Cute indeed.  At the tail-end of the evening we enjoyed some cake and ice-cream, and Shane had his first experience at blowing out candles.  When I brought the cake home, he knew instantly that that cake was for him, hence my earlier statement that he finally began to understand why this day was HIS day.  He was so excited for the cake, and looked at home when blowing out the candles.  Here's to many more birthdays, my dear prince!

Kyle's summary of Shrek 3

Shrek 3.  The trees are bad.  They are brown.  They pull the stick out of them and the leaves come out and they fall down.  They also  put the sticks back in them.  The trees turn into parachutes.  The big dragon blows fire.  Donkey has children.  They are flying donkeys.  Four of them.  They blow fire.  Donkey says, "Give your dad a hug".  Shrek says about babies, "they poop and they cry".  The baby came to his house and Shrek slammed the door.  He said, "where's the baby?"  The king was a frog kingy.  He says, "ribbit, ribbit".  He died.  Boots had a sword, and he and Shrek wanted to have a fight.  Shrek used a sword.  There were lots of cats on the rocks, they were Boots' friends.  The movie ended when they were sleeping.  Shrek swam away off the boat and he got home...and he said, "home!".

Shane is 1 year, 11 months, and 30 days old today...

Shane's speech therapist, Amy, came over today for the first time in 2 weeks since Shane fell ill.  It was a lot of fun to see him interacting with her again, and she could definitely tell that he has improved in his vocabulary.  Kyle of course always likes to join in, and today was no exception.  Following her departure we took a trip to Santa Maria to buy a birthday present for Shane who turns 2 tomorrow.  We got what he has been wanting for quite some time - Toy Story related of course - you'll find out tomorrow, surprise for now!  Then a trip to the new Mexican food store in Santa Maria called Vallarta.  Wow!  Definitely made me nostalgic for Delano as I remember spending many preparation days at Ranch Market during my 6 months there.  Not always a huge fan of Mexican food, I will be the first to admit that much of it looked (and smelled) quite good.  I can see myself stopping by again.  Tricia definitely enjoyed the store more than I did due to her immense love for Mexican varieties.  Supper.....italian sausages on the braai (bbq for those Americans who read this), cheesy mashed potatoes (my own concoction), green peas.  Mmmm!

Cooking

I will be the first to admit that I'm not brilliant in the kitchen, but I am always open to trying new things because I'm very good at following a recipe.  For some random reason, yesterday I decided that after 29 years of life that it was time to try my hand at making chicken enchiladas.  With a tiny bit of help from my wife, I used my brain as I figured out what was needed for the enchiladas.  Chicken, tortillas, cheese, green enchilada sauce (have to have the green), chopped chilli peppers....hmmm, I think that was it.  Anyway, after about 45 minutes in the oven it was time for the test.  And wow, what a taste it was!  Minus a little too much sauce, it was divine.  And so easy too.  I will definitely be trying my hand at it again. -NEVILLE

Fun Times

Hello, This is our first post on this blog. We had a great picnic at the park today with the little ones and Shane climbed up the ladder for his very first time ALONE today. He did it as if he has been climbing it forever. We have been blessed with such cute little guys and they are funny too. Neville and Kyle made homemade cookies tonight with 3 kinds of chips in them.. White chocolate, Milk Chocolate and Butterscotch!! They taste YUMMY!!! I shouldn't have any, but I'm sure I will.
